Kona Kai San Diego is certified as a Green Business by the Department of the Environment and has been recognized with 3 Green Keys by the Green Key Eco-Rating Program. San Diego Bay is our backyard. We know eco-friendly initiatives are of the utmost importance and that is why we strongly believe in taking the necessary steps to help ensure that our resort helps preserve and protect the indoor and outdoor environment.
Eco Facts
From LED light bulbs to motion-sensor control panels in guest rooms, low-flow water fixtures, environmentally responsible cleaning solutions to ongoing recycling efforts, we make sure our hotel is green all over.
Climate Change & Resilience
No more tiny bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Instead, our guests are treated to the luxurious scent and nourishment of our Lather bath & body essentials in large shower pump bottles to reduce the usage of single use plastic bottles. We also recycle our kitchen grease into biofuel.
The Paperless Future
At Kona Kai San Diego developing QR codes that are available to scan in every outlet. We also have a paperless check-in and check-out process to help reduce paper consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Kona Kai San Diego is Plastic Straw Free
In an effort to reduce waste and to keep our oceans clean and free from plastic and trash, Kona Kai San Diego offers biodegradable straws upon request.
Water Conservation
The hotel’s irrigation system is controlled by programmable timers, water schedules are adjusted weekly to conserve water based on local weather patterns. Our team changes linens every three days or upon guest check-out. We also ask guests to participate in hanging their towels to dry for reuse during their stay.
Indoor Air Quality
According to the EPA, indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air. We use MERV 11 filters to control air quality. We use a Building Automated System to control all public space heating and cooling to control energy consumption. The hotel also uses low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) carpets and pads, sealants, paints and adhesives.
Reduction of Chemicals
We use Green Seal certified cleaning products, resulting in sustainability. Our team reuses bottles and reduces hazards with non-irritating cleaners.
Same Light, Less Energy
Our San Diego green hotel reduces greenhouse gases by using LED light bulbs in a majority of fixtures.
Tesla Partnership & Charging Stations
Charge up while you relax. Thanks to our green initiative at the hotel, we’re pleased to offer complimentary charging stations for our Tesla vehicle owning guests. Offered in partnership with Tesla Motors, Kona Kai San Diego encourages Tesla owners staying with us (or just dropping by!) to recharge their car while taking advantage of our facilities and activities.
Cruiser Bikes
Decrease your carbon footprint by seeing San Diego on our Zybra bikes. The first two hours are complimentary, and we are in one of the most bike-friendly parts of the city, so you can explore our part of San Diego Bay while getting fresh air and exercise. Helmets and locks are provided with each bike.
Community Efforts
Through our affiliation with Noble House Hotels & Resorts and being a recognized leader in the San Diego hospitality industry, Kona Kai believes in aiding and assisting in local initiatives such as Earth Day “Keep Our Bay Clean”. Our team regularly volunteers with local partners and donates time, space, and services in an ongoing effort to keep our island’s carbon footprint for the community.
